HOUSTON — Jonathan Joss, the voice behind the beloved character John Redcorn from the animated series "King of the Hill," was fatally shot outside his home in San Antonio, Texas, on Sunday evening. Authorities reported that police received a call about a shooting in progress around 7 p.m. When officers arrived, they found the 59-year-old actor wounded near the street. Despite attempts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.
Joss's husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, confirmed the tragic news, stating, "He was murdered." The couple had married on Valentine’s Day earlier this year. De Gonzales recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining that they were checking their mail at their home, which had suffered significant damage in a fire earlier this year that claimed the lives of their three dogs.
According to de Gonzales, a man approached them and threatened them with a gun. "Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired, Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life," he said.
Following the incident, police arrested 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Ceja and charged him with murder. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed the motive behind the shooting. Court records did not indicate whether Ceja has legal representation.
Joss, who grew up in San Antonio, was widely recognized for his role in "King of the Hill," which aired for 13 seasons from 1997 to 2008. A reboot of the series is scheduled to premiere in August. He also had a recurring role as Chief Ken Hotate on the show "Parks and Recreation" and appeared in two episodes of "Tulsa King" in 2022.
In January, a GoFundMe page was established for Joss after the devastating house fire. The page noted that he lost all his belongings, including his vehicle, in the blaze. Just days before his death, Joss had been in Austin, about 80 miles northeast of San Antonio, participating in promotional events for the "King of the Hill" revival. He shared a video on Instagram where he expressed excitement about the show's return, stating, "The fans get to revisit 'King of the Hill' again, which I think is an amazing thing because it’s a great show."
De Gonzales emphasized Joss's appreciation for his fans, saying, "To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family." The community mourns the loss of a talented voice actor and a cherished individual.
