SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) -- A five-time convicted felon has been sentenced to prison by a federal jury for illegally possessing a firearm and ammunition.

Michael Anthony Rangel, 43, of Ogden, was sentenced to seven years in prison Monday after a jury found him guilty. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release by the judge.

In July 2022, Rangel was stopped by police for a traffic violation, and officers saw drug paraphernalia in plain view in the vehicle, according to the indictment. Rangel informed police that he had a weapon and that there was an active warrant out for his arrest.

The weapon was a stolen Taurus PT111 G2 pistol, and law enforcement seized the weapon and ammunition, according to a press release from the District of Utah United States Attorney's Office.
