AUSTIN, Texas — The last day in the Texas House and Senate saw something usually not seen in the final hours of a legislative session: state lawmakers voting on a bill.

A conference committee spent Monday working out differences on one bill: Senate Bill 293.

SB 293 would give Texas judges their first pay raise in more than a decade. Base pay would jump 25%, from $140,000 to $175,000 per year.

Because state lawmakers’ pensions are linked to judicial pay, they would also see a boost in retirement benefits.

However, SB 293 will delink legislative pensions from judicial pay starting in 2030. That's when the Texas Ethics Commission will begin deciding lawmakers' pension amounts.
