GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Police officers are investigating why firefighters found a dead man inside of a burning Gainesville apartment.

Around 1:40 p.m. Monday afternoon, 911 callers reported a fire at The Commons Apartments on Southwest 16th Street. One resident said they saw smoke billowing out of an apartment window, and watched someone come outside of the apartment coughing.

When Gainesville Fire Rescue crews arrived, they found a man dead inside with a gunshot wound. After searching the apartment, police officers found a gun inside.

Officers say that there is no threat to the residents at The Commons. Investigators from the State Fire Marshall’s office are investigating the cause of the fire.
