GILBERT, Ariz. — You'd be hard pressed to find anything out of the ordinary at an early morning Monday practice at Highland High School in Gilbert.

There's something timeless about high school football, and head coach Brock Farrel has been leading traditional tackle football training for two decades.

"Tackle football kind of rules America," he said. "It's America's passion."

But it's the workout after the workout that's emblematic of a changing landscape.

"People are realizing flag (football) is safer, sometimes it's a lot more fun," Legends of AZ flag football coach Rene Elizondo Jr. said.

Elizondo Jr. has two players pulling double duty.

The Nguyen brothers are a flag football family.

For 14-year-old Kaizen and 16-year-old Enzo, they've had a career path planned out for a while.
