BUCKEYE, Ariz. — State agriculture officials were on site at the massive Hickman’s egg production plant in the west Valley Monday, where six million chickens are being euthanized after a bird flu outbreak. A 12News drone camera viewed tractors digging trenches to the west of the chicken houses.

The loss represents about 95% of Hickman’s Family Farms' chickens. The company is the largest egg producer in the southwest, and the future impact on supplies and egg prices is unknown. Hickman’s CEO, Glenn Hickman, told 12News Friday they are working with business partners to prevent disruptions.
Since 2022, the bird flu has resulted in an estimated 270 million dead chickens at poultry and egg farms, 1,000 dairy herd outbreaks, and 70 known human infections. One person has died.
