The First Christian Church in Longview is a place where new parishioners feel like family, its members say. And on Sunday, the church will celebrate 150 years of serving the community and its members alike.

Though celebrations of the church’s sesquicentennial have been going on since the beginning of the year, a special anniversary service at 10:30 a.m. Sunday will feature former pastors and church leaders.

Four years after the city of Longview was established in 1871, members of the Disciples of Christ denomination opened their first church in a schoolhouse at the intersection of Green and Methvin streets in downtown. The church was an offshoot of the Peatown Christian Church near what is now East Texas Regional Airport.
