HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - Heartbreak.

Carson Paetow’s two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at Pete Taylor Park pulled the University of Southern Mississippi within a single run of the University of Miami.

But the two-out shot proved to be a last gasp too late, as Seth Smith flew out to left field to end the Golden Eagles’ last glimmer.

Top-seeded USM fell to the third-seeded Hurricanes, 5-4, Monday at Pete Taylor Park in a win-or-stay-home scenario in the finale of the Hattiesburg Regional.

Miami (34-25) pushed across two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to break a 1-1 tie, and USM (47-16) could not catch up.

The Hurricanes advance to a best-of-three Super Regional showdown with the University of Louisville.
