A 56-year-old man was shot to death early Tuesday in South Shore on the South Side.

Officers responded to a person shot around 1:20 a.m. in the 7800 block of South Merrill Avenue and found Alonzo Smith, 56, in the front yard shot in the head and left hand, Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Smith was dead at the scene, police said.

A witness told responding officers that two people were arguing before multiple gunshots rang out, officials said.

Area 2 detectives are investigating and no arrests have been made.
