CHICAGO (WGN) — A group of Chicago police officers is recovering in the hospital after they were injured in a crash while attempting to recover a stolen vehicle on the Northwest Side overnight.

According to police, the incident unfolded just after 8:30 p.m. Monday night, in the 5200 block of West Palmer Street, in Belmont Cragin, after officers spotted a car they believed had been taken in a carjacking.

Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over and activate the squad car's emergency lights, but the other driver allegedly refused to stop and continued driving.

Officers continued following the driver, but as they approached the vehicle, they had to swerve to avoid hitting another car in traffic, which caused the officer driving to lose control of the squad car and crash into a tree.
