CHICAGO (WGN) — Chicago police are searching for the person who fatally shot a man during an argument on the city's South Side overnight.

Chicago police say the deadly shooting occurred just before 1:30 a.m. in the 7800 block of South Merill Avenue, in South Shore.

According to police, a witness told officers that they had heard two males arguing just before several gunshots rang out.

When authorities arrived on the scene, they found the victim, a 56-year-old man, unresponsive in the front yard.

The man, who had suffered gunshot wounds to his head and hand, was later pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities have not yet identified the victim killed and it is unclear what led up the altercation.

An investigation by Chicago police is now underway.
