GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Tuesday marks 45 years since seven tornadoes hit Grand Island in what has been called the "Night of the Twisters."

According to the National Weather Service, on June 3, 1980, a supercell storm complex developed in the early morning hours in the northern part of Grand Island. The storm produced a total of seven tornadoes -- three of which were uniquely anti-cyclonic, the weather service said.
Weather Service data said the first tornado -- a 700-yard wide F-3 tornado -- touched down at 8:45 p.m. northwest of Grand Island and tracked seven miles.
