Twelve days ago I read of a move by President Trump’s supporters that could crush opposition to his disregard for the Constitution and his takeover of government and private institutions (e.g. universities and law firms) basic to our society.

Congress is approving sadly unqualified presidential appointments, including a head of homeland security who does not know the meaning, much less the importance, of habeas corpus. It permits him to wipe out funding approved by its members and to change tariffs at a whim. It is avoiding a stand on birthright citizenship.

The cowardice of the legislative branch means the courts are the major power preventing President Trump from ruling as a king.

On May 29 the New York Times listed 181 court rulings that “have at least temporarily paused some of the
