Feeding South Dakota , the state's largest hunger relief organization, says it will provide 1.8 million fewer meals over the next fiscal year, which begins July 1, unless it can replace $2.6 million lost due to federal cuts.

The nonprofit, which distributes food to all 66 counties in South Dakota, relies on donations of money and food and support from federal programs. It provided 11.7 million meals across the state during the 2024 fiscal year.

"I don’t know that we’ll be able to close the gap between resources and the number of seniors, veterans, families and children seeking food assistance through our programs and partners, which continues to rise month-over-month," Feeding South Dakota CEO Lori Dykstra said in a letter to state lawmakers.
