Seoul, South Korea — Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung was elected president of South Korea in a snap election sparked by the impeachment of the country's former leader, Yoon Suk Yeol . As of early Wednesday, Lee had a lead over his conservative rival Kim Moon-soo that was mathematically impossible to surpass.

Kim conceded the race, telling reporters he "humbly accepts the people's choice" and gave Lee his congratulations.

Lee didn't formally claim victory when he appeared earlier before supporters in the nation's capital, repeating his goals to reinvigorate the economy and unite the country.
