MARTINSBURG — For many years — and possibly still today — the name George Karos has been synonymous with the City of Martinsburg.

Karos, who served for 24 years as an at-large council member and then an additional 20 years as mayor, passed away Sunday at the age of 93.

Karos, born Sept. 10, 1931, attended Shepherd College and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the Medical College of Virginia, School of Pharmacy, located in Richmond, Virginia. Karos also served in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman, attaining the rank of PO3.
