The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is warning drivers about a statewide scam involving falsified traffic fines.

According to a Monday release, scammers are posing as the DMV to send text messages falsely claiming that recipients owe money for unpaid fines. In order to avoid having their license and registration suspended, the message says, drivers must click on an included link and pay a fine.

According to the release, clicking on the link could cause personal information to be stolen.

“The DMV will never send you text messages demanding payment for fines or fees,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey in the release. “We urge our customers to be vigilant and avoid sending your personal information via text.”
