DALLAS — A bill allowing for local elections to be moved from May to November in odd-numbered years passed in the Texas legislature last week, as Texas voters prepare to head to the polls again for the runoff elections .
The bill, authored by State Sen. Nathan Johnson, D-Dallas, and Royce West, D-Dallas, passed in the Texas Senate and House as of last week and was sent to Gov. Greg Abbott's desk.
If Gov. Greg Abbott signs it into law, this year could be the last time voters head to the polls in May. Early voting in the subsequent June 7 runoff elections ends today, June 3.
The legislature's passage of the bill also comes after Dallas voters in November passed a city charter amendment that removed the requirement that city council elections be held in May.
