When 13-year-old Nolan Grove pointed a black .38 pistol at 12-year-old Kain Heiland’s back and pulled the trigger , was he trying to kill him?

That’s the question Nolan’s attorney threw at a York County jury Tuesday morning at the opening of the boy’s murder trial.

Prosecutors accuse Nolan, now 15, of killing Kain, his “friend since kindergarten,” while the two were going back-and-forth over a “your mother” joke told the evening of April 1, 2023, in an alley between two houses on their block.

Prosecutors are giving jurors two options.
