LAUREL, Miss. (WDAM) - Laurel police are seeking a suspect in a Monday drive-by shooting that ended with a 2-year-old girl being airlifted to Jackson.

Laurel Police Department Chief Tommy Cox said Tuesday evening that the girl was shot and wounded about 6 p.m. Monday while in a vehicle with two adults on Ellisville Boulevard just off the Interstate 59 exit.

The child was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she is reportedly in critical condition, Cox said.

Cox said an initial investigation has led LPD to believe that a rifle was used in the shooting.

Witnesses described the suspect as a light-skinned, young black man in a white, four-door car, Cox said.
