A Plaistow woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Exeter as she and a friend tried to help the dog they were walking get off the tracks, police said.

“The train approached quickly from a corner behind them and the unleashed dog ran onto the tracks at the sound of the train’s horn,” according to a news release from the Exeter Police Department.

“The couple attempted to get the dog off the tracks and as a result both people were struck,” the release stated.

Alicia Leonardi, 42, and a male friend were walking the dog along the tracks in a wooded area near the Newfields Road trestle when she and the friend were both struck by an outbound train at approximately 3:24 p.m. on Monday, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, suffered only minor injuries.
