GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - After a social media post circulated on election day claiming county residents can vote in Municipal Elections, the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office made a Facebook post reminding voters this isn’t true.

Allegedly, the initial social media post encouraged residents of Harrison County, who don’t live in Gulfport city limits, to vote. Tuesday evening, there were reports of long lines at the Lyman Ward 7 voting precinct, where over 250 county residents waited to file affidavit ballots.

The Secretary of State’s statement was posted Tuesday at 6 p.m., and reads as follows:

County residents were not turned away at polling places, and were allowed to file an affidavit ballot, but those ballots will not be factored into the final count.
