SAN ANTONIO — A severe shortage of pediatric psychiatrists in San Antonio is leading to extended wait times for children in need of medical attention, with some families experiencing delays of three to six months before seeing a doctor.

Recent statistics indicate that one in six children aged 6 to 17 has a mental health disorder. The National Alliance on Mental Illness has reported a 50 percent increase in suicide attempts among teenagers in Bexar County. "They don't know what to do, so they think that's their last resort," McPheron said.
