South Beloit’s new boys basketball coach grew up in a coaching world. Jake Ott and his younger brother, Brett, would tag along on scouting trips with their dad, Rockford Auburn’s Hall of Fame coach Bryan Ott.

“I grew up in it. The coaching world was normal to me," Jake Ott said. "I always had fun as a kid when my dad would take me and my brother to help him scout opponents back when it wasn’t easy to obtain things online. He'd bring the camcorder and we'd go to see places I never would have had a reason to visit otherwise — Proviso West or Glenbard South, take your pick. It was cool to be with him. It was a mini-adventure, being out with my dad.”

So maybe it’s natural that Jake Ott is now a coach. And that it is at the school where he was a two-year starter in both basketball and footbal
