The Tyne and Wear Metro will be extended for the first time in 30 years as part of Government plans to invest in public transport outside of London.
Around £900million has been earmarked for the project which would build a new line between South Hylton and Pelaw, connecting Washington and Follingsby to the network.
It is hoped it will be up and running by 2033 with a feasibility study into the new route is already underway, alongside design work for the stations, bridges and other infrastructure.
