Catawba County plans to use about $777,980 in opioid settlement money in the next fiscal year to continue funding three strategies to treat opioid addiction.

Monday night, the Catawba County Board of Commissioners approved $163,936 for an opioid and substance use disorder coordinator position in the next fiscal year, $180,000 to provide medically assisted treatment and associated therapy to people at the Catawba County Detention Center and $434,044 for a post-overdose response team (PORT) that will work with people who have had an overdose.

The PORT team is made up of four people. The program works by allowing paramedics to get in touch with someone who has experienced an overdose within 24 to 72 hours after the overdose. The team provides support, education, access to medication and oth
