High priest Caiaphas, portrayed by Adam DelMedico with an ice-cold sneer of triumph, takes the stage to play the distinctive guitar lick at the start of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” onstage at Theater West End in Sanford. He’s dressed in totalitarianism black, and his goons are soon chasing a poor family, baby in tow.

If ICE doesn’t come to mind, you are at the wrong show. Director Tara Kromer has devised a sometimes heart-pounding retelling of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1971 rock musical that is set firmly in the present — from Jonny Jones’ contrasting costumes promoting conformity or celebrating individualism, to the rainbow banners that celebrate gay pride in the raucous “Hosanna” number.
