Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia in Palm Beach, Florida in July 2023

Social media is dive-bombing MAGA Rep. Marjorie Taylor (R-Ga.) after she admitted regretting voting for President Donald Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful” spending bill. Greene said she had not been aware of its contents.

“Full transparency, I did not know about this section on pages 278-279 of the OBBB that strips states of the right to make laws or regulate AI for 10 years,” Greene wrote on X Tuesday. “I am adamantly OPPOSED to this and it is a violation of state rights and I would have voted NO if I had known this was in there.”

The sprawling, 1,000+ page bill slipped through the thin House Republican majority by a single vote in May. Greene was one of the supporters not only voting for the bill but condemning other Republicans with cold feet. But a section Greene now takes issue with would halt states from regulating artificial intelligence for the next decade. A coalition of lawmakers believe the language will make it harder to address AI-generated scams.

Greene claims she had not read enough of the bill to identify the controversial section.

“We have no idea what AI will be capable of in the next 10 years and giving it free rein and tying states’ hands is potentially dangerous,” she wrote on X.

Reaction on X was swift, with U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell posting beneath her admission that “You have one job. To. Read. The. F------. Bill.”

“MTG is the Second Republican House Representative that voted for the One Big Beautiful budget bill they hadn’t read,” posted News Night Associate Producer Maggie Jordan, referencing U.S. Rep Mike Flood (R-Neb.), who was booed by constituents at a town hall last week when he, too, admitted being unaware of the section. “Governing at its finest,” she added.

Other posts excoriated MTG’s lack of attention to detail. “I guess we made the bold assumption that Marjorie Taylor Greene could read,” wrote podcaster Karly Kingsley.

Progressive voices, in particular, piled on Greene, with liberal influencer Brian Krassenstein quipping: “Here's an idea. If you are voting on something without understanding it, please resign immediately.”

“We should bring back shame,” wrote Project Liberal Executive Director Joshua Reed Eakle on X.

Marty Taylor, executive director of progressive PAC New Blue USA, said he, for once, found himself in accord with Greene. “I hate to admit it but I gotta agree with MTG on this. She should have read the bill. But she is 100% right. This one time.”

Greene added in her X post that she would not be voting for the bill when it returns to the House for final approval unless the controversial section is removed.
