PHOENIX — An investigation is underway after a wrong-way driver crashed into another vehicle on Interstate 17 Wednesday morning.

The crash happened at milepost 196 near 7th Avenue in south Phoenix, the Department of Public Safety said. Southbound lanes were closed but reopened shortly before 7:30 a.m.

DPS told 12News crews on scene that the wrong-way driver, 18-year-old Javayah Shecole Burkett of Glendale, was killed in the crash. The other driver, a 53-year-old man from Tolleson, was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries. Officials haven't disclosed their identities.

The cause of the crash is unknown.
