Abnormally warm ocean temperatures have led to storms like Hurricane Milton and its ability to rapidly intensify before landfall.
Rapidly intensifying storms pose a greater threat to coastal residents, as the intensification is difficult to forecast and leaves residents little time to react after the storm has strengthened.
Looking year-to-year at ocean temperatures, this year's water temperatures are generally cooler than this time last year.
