On May 23, the WHO recognized kidney disease as a global health threat and urged member states to take steps to promote kidney health and strengthen prevention and treatment efforts, according to a WHO press release.

The resolution, proposed by Guatemala, co-sponsored by a coalition of more than 20 member states and adopted at the 78th World Health Assembly, identifies kidney disease as a large force behind mortality due to noncommunicable disease and provides steps for addressing it, according to Marcello Tonelli, MD, SM, MSc, FRCPC, CAHS, FRSC, professor in the department of medicine at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine and 2025-2027 president of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), which advocated for WHO to adopt Guatemala’s resolution.
