On April 15, 1989, pro-democracy student protests began in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. The six-week-long protests ended on June 4, 1989, when the Chinese government ordered the People's Liberation Army to open fire and drive tanks through thousands of protestors, resulting in the deaths of between 50 to 2,500 people.
