NEWPORT — The Selkirk Alliance for Science has invited Carl Kostoff, a longtime student of edible plants, to share his knowledge with the community. Kostoff, a retired firefighter, emergency medical technician, and amateur scientist, will lead a free field trip to identify more than 50 varieties of edible plants.

Attendees will meet at the Create Arts Center garden parking lot, 900 W. 4th St., Newport, at 9 a.m. Thursday, June 19. Participants will travel by carpool or individually about 20 minutes to the field destination. Attendees should wear sturdy shoes for hiking a short trail, appropriate clothing for the weather, and bring a lawn chair, drinks or snacks, and optionally a camera to photograph specimens.
