A traffic ticket payment text scam surfacing in the Triad is being called "the latest and most sophisticated yet" by the N.C. Transportation Department.

The texts are part of a scam network spreading across the country.

They count on that little bit of doubt in the back of your mind, enough that you wonder if you should just check it out.

“NCDMV is aware of multiple fraudulent text scams happening now requesting payment for fees, fines or tolls," said Marty Homan, the division's communications manager.

"NCDMV will never request payment by text. Please report any text you receive as spam and delete it.”

The first clue that the text is a scam is that it comes from the N.C. Department of Vehicles (DMV) with a stark "final notice" enforcement warning for the recipient.
