CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The Hamilton County Commission approved the next step of a future Hixson school. The commission approved the school to go into the next step of the design process.

The school is planned to replace DuPont, Rivermont, and Alpine Crest Elementary Schools.

However, the closure of Rivermont and Alpine Crest have sparked backlash from residents, including Commissioner David Sharpe.

The commissioner claimed he had heard a potential change to those plans, which Hamilton County Weston Wamp refuted.

Commissioner Sharpe said, “There have been conservations that suggest that possibly the closing of the Rivermont School will not happen as a result of growing student body populations in schools in the Hixson area.”
