PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Providence Police Department has referred a complaint over alleged financial misconduct at the NAACP Providence branch to federal investigators, Target 12 has learned.
The disclosure by Deputy Chief Tim O'Hara comes after national NAACP leaders announced Tuesday evening they had suspended the local branch's leadership and filed a complaint with city police that O'Hara described as "financial in nature." Police referred the complaint to the FBI after determining it was "multijurisdictional," he said.
O'Hara declined to confirm any other details, and said detectives have not reviewed any documents.
FBI spokesperson Kristen Setera told Target 12 on Wednesday that the agency does not confirm or deny investigations.
