(CNN) - Sources reported that the Trump administration has taken hundreds of migrant children living in the U.S. out of their homes and into government custody.

The actions have been described as welfare checks.

At times, the children are separated from their families, making it harder for them to be released.

President Donald Trump and his aides have pointed to what they say was an influx of children arriving at the U.S. southern border under the Biden administration without a parent or guardian.

The administration said hundreds of thousands of them went unaccounted for and may be in dangerous situations.

But former Biden officials and some immigration experts refute claims there are large numbers of children missing from the system.
