MARTINSBURG—What began as a small reception to honor veterans at Musselman High School in 2003 developed into a packed house at Arden United Methodist Church on Tuesday as more than 70 veterans and their guests were honored.

The gathering, sponsored by the Shenandoah Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, originated as a culmination of one Musselman High School student’s love of history. According to former Musselman history teacher Bev Coffman, Angela Serna was a top history student who wanted to do an independent study above and beyond her assigned studies. Serna chose to interview World War II veterans (and some World War I veterans as well) and record their stories.
