Ground beef on your grocery list?
Consumers who buy the product in certain states — and at Whole Foods — should check their purchases before firing up the grill. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert over potential E. coli contamination.
A June 3 announcement from FSIS notes that the affected ground beef, sold under the Organic Ranch and produced by NPC Processing Inc., may still be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers.
An issue with the product arose when NPC Processing Inc. alerted FSIS that it had shipped out ground beef product that tested positive for a strain of E. coli called E. coli O157:H7, a potentially fatal bacterium.
