The southbound lanes of Florida’s Turnpike closed for about an hour west of Delray Beach Wednesday afternoon after a multi-vehicle crash involving a semi-tractor trailer.

The accident occurred near mile marker 79 just before 1 p.m., and about a half-dozen vehicles are involved. Traffic was backed up, but at least one lane reopened as of 2:15 p.m.

Heavy delays are expected, and motorists are asked to take alternative routes.

Multiple patients have been taken to area hospitals.
