RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — North Carolina Republicans continue their push this week to strengthen immigration enforcement and laws in the state, with major pushback from Democrats.
“We’re putting fuel to the fire of this artificial narrative around immigrant criminality, and I just don’t want to convince North Carolinians of that lie,” Democratic Senator Sophia Chitlik said of House Bill 318 on Wednesday.
The bill requires law enforcement to verify the immigration status of anyone detained and notify ICE agents immediately if the person is undocumented.
Republicans say it’ll cut back on violent crime. Democrats say there’s no evidence showing immigrants commit violent crime.
