ROCKVILLE, Md. (DC News Now) -- Montgomery County is investing $750,000 in a growing effort to use food as a tool for improving health and fighting childhood hunger. The county announced it is awarding funds to six partnerships focused on connecting families with nutritious, locally grown food.

The initiative is part of the “Food as Medicine” program, led by the Office of Food Systems Resilience and the Office of Grants Management. The program brings together pediatric clinics, school-based health centers, local farms, and food assistance organizations to serve children from birth to age 18 who are at risk of diet-related illnesses.

“In Montgomery County, we are now connected in a way we haven’t been before,” said Catherine Nardi, program manager for the Office of Food Systems Resilience
