House Speaker Melissa Minor-Brown and Sen. Nicole Poore will host a June 5 community town hall to discuss recent Delaware City Refinery incidents.

The two New Castle Democrats said on June 3 in a joint statement that they are planning legislation to strengthen penalties and ensure support for communities impacted by industrial pollution.

The Delaware City Refinery started emitting more-than-permitted sulfur dioxide, a toxic gas, after a mechanical failure May 26. Throughout the incident, sulfur dioxide levels have remained well below the human health standard, according to data from a nearby air monitoring station. In other words: The air is safe to breathe, according to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
