WASHINGTON (TNND) — In a 2 a.m. social media post Wednesday, President Donald Trump vented about Chinese President Xi Jinping, the latest in a back-and-forth that has cast doubt on whether the world's two largest economies can settle their trade differences that have been exacerbated by Trump's trade war.

“I like President XI of China, always have, and always will, but he is VERY TOUGH, AND EXTREMELY HARD TO MAKE A DEAL WITH!!!” Trump said.

A few hours earlier, on Tuesday night, China's Foreign Ministry posted images of its meeting with U.S. Ambassador to China David Purdue, saying Foreign Minister Wang Yi hoped Purdue would prove to be a "reliable communicator, a mediator of differences, and a promoter of cooperation between the two countries."
