AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Department of Transportation Amarillo District wanted to bring awareness to the public to prevent hot car deaths.

TxDOT said it is urging the public to be vigilant about preventing hot car deaths as the summer months start to bring warmer temperatures to the area. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 65% of "pediatric vehicular heatstroke" deaths in the US happen in June, July, and August.

TxDOT detailed that heatstroke is a condition that happens when the body cannot cool itself quickly enough, and body temperature rises to dangerous levels. Cars can heat up to 19 degrees Fahrenheit in 10 minutes and can continue to get hotter.
