DALLAS — The decades-long plan for Dallas to build a new police training academy is behind schedule and tens of millions of dollars over budget, according to city documents.
Instead of costing about $140 million dollars, as the city projected in 2022, the current proposal of building two separate sites will run at least $275 million.
Last summer, the city projected the controversial training facility would be constructed by 2027. In its latest briefing, the city said it aims for a grand opening in mid-2028 for the first phase of its plans and 2029 for the second part.
The city has $96.5 million in funding secured for the project, and said Wednesday it will consider yet another bond election to ask voters for permission to raise additional funds to pay for the ballooning project.
