Last month, Indiana-based Ray & Mascari Inc. recalled its 4-count packs of vine-ripe tomatoes over possible salmonella contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has since escalated the recall to Class I status, indicating a severe risk of “serious adverse health consequences or death.”

The FDA urges consumers to check freezers for any recalled tomatoes, initially sold in New York, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Mississippi through Gordon Food Service Stores. Affected products were packaged in clamshell containers with UPC #7 96553 20062 1 and Lot #RM250424 15250B or RM250427 15250B.
