CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa is urging five Iowa cities to drop their bans on drag show performances - calling it discriminatory.
The communities restricting performances are Carroll, Harlan, Mt. Pleasant, Polk City, and Webster City.
The cities restrict performances by “female impersonators” and “male impersonators” by classifying them as adult entertainment.
The ACLU of Iowa held a press conference today saying that the ordinance restricts free speech. Saying, drag is a form of expression and many types of drag are family-friendly. That classifying all drag shows as adult entertainment or “obscene material” is unconstitutional and must be changed.
