DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The City of Durham is investing millions of dollars to clean up a handful of parks contaminated with lead in the soil.

For nearly two years, orange fencing has lined the five city parks. At Northgate Park, Lisa Coulon didn't know about the issue until Wednesday and said she didn't see any signs.

"It's very upsetting that I've been walking my dog around this park and he's been eating grass and I did not know that there was lead in this park," Coulon said. "I was trying to figure out why there was orange fence everywhere."

The City of Durham's proposed budget for this year includes $7 million for lead soil cleanup at each impacted park. That brings the city's total investment into this issue to $12 million so far.
