BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) - Bowie Police Department's Chief Dwyane Preston was sworn in January 2024, and since then, has been making the community an important aspect of policing in Bowie.

Preston said he is happy with the direction the department is heading, but there are still areas that need improvement. He said he doesn’t consider Bowie to have a violent crime problem, but wants the number to go down regardless.

"Property crime is our biggest challenge but we're making good progress with that,” Preston said. “In this year we've seen some reductions. We have a goal of a 10% reduction in crime.”

And the department will be able to make a strong push this coming summer. The department is expanding the number of officers to 70, which comes after the city council’s new budget for the 2025
